Texas A&M Aerospace Engineering Students Visit Southwest Research Institute
This October, 50 students from the Aerospace Engineering 101 honors class and four Aerospace Engineering faculty members traveled to Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, TX, for a behind-the-scenes tour of their facilities. Southwest Research Institute is one of the oldest and largest independent, nonprofit, applied research and development organizations in the United States.
Dr. Dale Cope, Program Manager – Aerospace Structures and former TAMU Aero student, class of 1982, directed the students, mentors and faculty members on a tour of Southwest Research Institute’s laboratories and other projects. There, students saw a T-38 research project, a new deep sea research submersible, giant vacuum chamber, scanning electron microscope facility, and tensile testing machinery. They also heard presentations on avionics and support systems and space science projects.
This tour allowed the students to get a better feel for what industry has to offer, what jobs could be available and what areas they may be working in in the future. Special thanks to Dr. Dale Cope and everyone at Southwest Research Institute for their hospitality!
